Project Based Learning in Pre-Kindergarten

The Pre-K project on backyard animals really challenged the kids to do higher level thinking.  They had to go through the process of researching a topic, understanding it, synthesizing the info into a short presentation, and then ultimately presenting their topic.  I was really impressed by the work they did.

There are so many amazing things I could say about this project from the way the PK team embraced a growth mindset from the very beginning, their eagerness to collaborate from start to finish, their attentiveness to details, to the excitement they passed on to their students. But since “less is more” and “pictures say more than words,” here is a visual story of PK’s PBL journey inspired by two classic adages:

I loved the PK project. I thought it was such a nice idea that you had the children practice their public speaking in front of faculty members and for them to receive feedback on how they could improve their lines. What a great thing to start at such a young age! I was very impressed with how excited they all were to each share their animal facts with all of the parents and PDS staff. You could tell they were all proud of their research!

It was so awesome to listen to Matthew and his classmates express how much they had learned about the animals they encounter in the backyard. I loved listening to them explain all of the RESEARCH that went into this project! Matthew’s word not mine!  🙂😊 It’s amazing how much the children have grown speaking in front of their peers and other adults so proudly. I was also so impressed with the teachers’ creative idea to incorporate the cell phone technology that allowed myself to not only experience the museum in person, but also to be able to share the experience with my husband at home that evening. I cant wait to come back next year to see Myles in action.

An absolutely amazing effort by the teachers and by the children as well! Frankly, this blog entry demonstrates the same level of engagement and enthusiasm. I am so glad that Primary Day children got to experience ways to learn based on their authentic questions, inquiry-based research, and the art, literacy, STEM, values, and public speaking goals we always share.
